This painting is based on Base Mural 1 by Sam Francis, and the room at the Norton Simon Museum dedicated to it.

Over the years I’ve come to look forward to its familiar, comforting presence at the gallery. No matter how many times I visit, I can’t quite remember the painting’s exact pattern of shapes. As if they are changing over time. Relearning them when I visit feels as if I am catching up with an old friend.
